- Court-Ordered Treatment and Evaluation: Individuals convicted of animal hoarding offenses may be required by the court to undergo psychological evaluation, counseling, or treatment as part of sentencing conditions.
- Bond Requirements for Seized Animals: Persons charged in animal hoarding cases may be required to post a bond or security deposit to cover the ongoing care and housing costs of animals seized during legal proceedings.
- Fire and Safety Hazards: The City of Albuquerque recognizes hoarding conditions as significant fire and safety risks, particularly when clutter blocks exits or creates excessive combustible hazards. Fire departments and code enforcement agencies may intervene under applicable safety regulations.
- Public Nuisance and Health Violations: Although hoarding itself may not always constitute a standalone criminal offense, conditions involving severe odors, pest infestations, unsanitary environments, or structural damage may be treated as public nuisance or public health violations under state or local law.
